Why Not Just Use a Font Generator?
Would you let your five year old cut your hair because they have a pair of scissors? I’ll be perfectly honest about it. Using a font generator doesn’t make you a type designer any more than using a blender makes a person a trained chef.
Tools to generate a font do exist, and yes, they can produce a basic font. I know because I’ve tested them out. And those font generators are why I offer white label services for font creation. There are a few things they don’t tell you and you’ll only find out those pesky irritating things after you’ve generated your font:

- Submit your lettering
If you have lettering art that you have created, submit your files to me after you’ve processed your first payment of 50% of your quote. I can work from sketches, Procreate files, .jpg or .png images, or vector files. You don’t need to submit a full character set with letters, numbers, and punctuation, but it is helpful for continuity. We can address what is required during this step of the process.If you don’t have lettering samples that you created, but you have an idea in mind, we can skip ahead to Step 2 and begin defining font style based on your ideas and any sample images you might have saved for aesthetic purposes.
- Style alignment
This is where you and I define direction, intended uses, and we go over the features you’d like more in depth so that we’re on the same page. This is the point where we address any challenges or concerns on either side, with regard to your future font. I can identify any possible issues ahead of time, and make any requests for additional lettering & images if required. You can expect a fair amount of communication at this stage to ensure a smooth development process in the next step. - Font development
This is the nitty gritty, and the longest part of the process. It requires a lot of attention to detail and finessing! The development step is where your sketches and ideas come to life. Each character in your future font is created, refined, adjusted, and programmed perfectly. - Review & revisions
Prior to beginning the review & revision step, you’ll process your second 50% payment. I’ll provide a working (but not finalized) font file to you with complete instructions on what you need to do to begin your testing and revision stage. You provide feedback to me, and I make adjustments accordingly. This step of the process is important, because only one opportunity to revise is included. - Final delivery
I’ll send off your finalized font files! I provide .otf, .ttf, and webfont files as a part of your custom font creation.
A safe estimate is between 2-6 weeks. The process can go super quickly if you provide full lettering samples and concise feedback in a timely manner. While there is nothing wrong with working off of an idea with minimal samples or references, the process can take much longer during the creation step. Similarly, if feedback is vague or communication is slow, this can also lengthen the process. I keep my clients updated through every step of the process, and do my best to give accurate estimations for every next step of the process. No surprises here!
I will not modify font files that were sourced from another font designer or resource marketplace without clear written permission from the original designer.
Yes, your payment is split automatically. Your first payment (50%) is due at the start of the project. Your second payment (50%) is due prior to review time & revisions.
Absolutely! If you’d like me to create product images for your new font, I can provide a quote for this. The quote will be based on the number of images required. You will need to provide specific image dimensions based on where you plan to sell your font so that I can prepare them especially for the platform(s).
Any quote I provide is valid for 90 days from the date that the quote is sent to you. If 90 days pass before you’re ready to push forward with font creation, drop me an email. We can figure out if any details have changed, and whether or not the existing quote requires an adjustment.
